Introducing the caffeinated wookie…

South African illustrator in a complicated relationship with his sketchbook. Been drawing things since he was but a wee lad. Often found staring at blank walls, into tins of paint, or chasing pigeons. Violent coffee addiction. Known to yawn like a wookiee.

Art is a powerful tool for learning, and stimulating ideas and dreams. In a world that today seems to be facing an overwhelming array of social and ecological challenges, I believe art, in its various mediums and formats, has a vital role to play in addressing them.

Perhaps one way I can contribute is through learning more about the world around me and then sharing that through illustration in different formats. My work is very much influenced by comics, street art, and the concept art industries. As such, my work varies from traditional, mixed media, to digital illustration, zines, and public murals. These forms are more accessible to a much larger audience than what one might typically find in a contemporary fine art gallery space, and can therefore have greater potential to relay stories and information, to trigger the imagination, and stimulate dialogue around other ways of being.

The body of work I am currently busy with, often explores endangered animal species and different elements of human cultures, combining them into portraits of a sort of hybrid human tribe that are more connected with the natural world than most of us are today. They are a way of condensing what I find interesting and beautiful in the world, fostering a better appreciation for those things in myself, and sharing that through art.
